Imagine a world in which no one can lie. Now try to imagine the consequences. Halperin has written this generation's 1984, and rarely have our customers praised a book more highly. (Click on the title, and find out what they have to say . . . assuming they are telling the truth!) And only time will tell whether Halperin's book is speculative fiction, or inverse history. Very Highly Recommended.

The publisher says:
Prepare to have your conception of truth rocked to its very foundation. In THE TRUTH MACHINE, visionary first-time novelist James L. Halperin creates a prophetic, all-too-conceivable world of the near future. Groundbreaking, provocative, and ultimately hopeful, THE TRUTH MACHINE will forever alter your opinion of justice and your perception of honesty. For in the next millennium, lying will be a thing of the past. Will you be ready for the absolute truth? Soon to be a major motion picture from Warner Brothers.

"The Truth Machine portrays a riveting dystopia/utopia; the book may well become a cult classic, if not more." --Howard Gardner, Harvard Professor and bestselling author of Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

"A fascinating look into the future; the ideas about health and longevity are truly ingenious. The Truth Machine is quite simply the most entertaining and thought-provoking novel I've read in years." --Larry North, Bestselling author and nationally syndicated fitness host, KRLD Radio & Prime Sports TV network.

"I loved The Truth Machine. Once I started the book, I couldn't put it down. Much, much better than the mindless fiction one reads." --Dr. Robert Sternberg, professor at Yale Dept. of Psychology, prolific author and widely quoted expert on intelligence research.

"Crime is our number one global national security threat, and The Truth Machine is the first piece of serious speculative fiction to tackle it head on. Not since Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead have we had a portrait of a great man that is as convincing and poignant as that of Pete Armstrong, whose life, sufferings, and achievements are simultaneously credible and moving. James Halperin has turned the future into a great read, projecting current trends about technology, business, government, and psychology into an utterly believable future. This is a novel to be discussed and debated by thoughtful readers for years to come." --Jonathan M. Winer, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Law Enforcement and Crime.

As prophetic as it is exciting, Idoru takes us to 21st century Tokyo where both the promises of technology and the disasters of cyber-industrialism stand in stark contrast, where the haves and the have-nots find themselves walled apart, and where information and fame are the most valuable and dangerous currencies.

When Rez, the lead singer for the rock band Lo/Rez is rumored to be engaged to an "idoru" or "idol singer" -- an artificial celebrity creation of information software agents -- 14-year-old Chia Pet McKenzie is sent by the band's fan club to Tokyo to uncover the facts. At the same time, Colin Laney, a data specialist for Slitscan television, uncovers and publicizes a network scandal. He flees to Tokyo to escape the network's wrath. The quintessence of cyberpunk.

Mixing the brutal futuristic visions of Phillip K. Dick with the tough-talk of Raymond Chandler, Jonathan Lethem's first two novels are among the most acclaimed works of this generation. Lethem's newest book, his first collection of short-stories, is sure to be as well received.

Occupying that gray area between sci-fi, fiction, mystery, Kafka, and William Burroughs, it's unlikely that there will be a more original or daring book this year than the The Wall of the Sky, The Wall of the Eye. From "The Happy Man," the tale of the man allowed to journey back through a hell ruled by a child rapist named the Happy Man to see his family after his death, to "Forever, Said the Duck," the story of a couple who throw a party for virtual-reality versions of their former lovers, to "The Hardened Criminals," in which the criminals are fused into the prison wall as punishment, this stunning collection will take the breath away of fans of any genre.

"Any writer who can make you hang on every word of a conversation between a clock and a bonsai tree is an author to be reckoned with" (Newsweek). Here are seven slices of dark imagination from the award-winning author of Gun, with Occasional Music and Amnesia Moon.

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials)

In a way, it's a shame that Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass is classified as a children's book&emdash;adult readers might dismiss it, and that would be a huge mistake. This novel is one of the best book sof the year (the other, FYI, is Angela's Ashes);

It's an absolute stunner, the 1990s heir to the works of master fantasist J.R.R. Tolkien, and destined to become a classic on its own. The Golden Compass takes place "in a universe like ours, but different in many ways."

Pullman introduces readers to a world as convincing and thoroughly realized as Narnia, Earthsea, of Redwall, wherein lives a half-wild, half-civilized girl named Lyra Belacqua, whose carefree life among the scholars of Jordan College is about the shattered by the arrival of two powerful visitors. No one should miss this book!

Midwest Book Review:
It takes some time to absorb Pullman's setting: a quasi-fantasy where humans work with chameleon-type small demon familiars, and where a wild palace child finds herself involved in a dangerous mystery of missing children and a calling to head north. When older YAs have absorbed this fantasy setting, the real thrill begins in enjoying a complex tale in which a girl's personal battles reach into larger issues affecting the world.

Praise for THE GOLDEN COMPASS:
"One of the best fantasy/adventure stories I have read in years" (Terry Brooks) "Very grand indeed...There is scene after scene of power and beauty." (New York Times Book Review) "Superb...Offers moral complexity as well as heart-stopping adventures." (Washington Post Book World) "A fantasy-adventure that sparkles with childlike wonder but is overlaid with a darker, enigmatic intensity." (Boston Sunday Globe) "Extraordinary storytelling at its very best." (Detroit Free Press) "Nothing short of breathtaking...This glittering gem will leave readers of all ages eagerly awaiting the next installment" (Publishers Weekly) "A shattering tale that begins with a promise and delivers an entire universe" (Kirkus Reviews) "An astonishing, compelling fantasy...Touching, exciting, and mysterious by turns, this is a splendid work" (Horn Book Magazine)

The Sparrow

This strange, ambitious science-fiction novel has already won enough attention for its first-time author to make it a selection by both the Book of the Month and QPB clubs.

Father Emilio Sandoz, a Jesuit linguist, heads a team of scientists and explorers on an expedition to the planet Rakhat, where contact has been established with two apparently primitive races, the Runa and the Jana'ata. The narrative shifts back and forth between 2016, when contact is first made, and 2060, to a Vatican inquest interrogating the maimed and broken Sandoz. A paleoanthropologist, Russell makes the descriptions of the inhabitants of Rakhat both convincing and unsettling.

Publishers Weekly :
An enigma wrapped inside a mystery sets up expectations that prove difficult to fulfill in Russell's first novel.

Synopsis:
The Sparrow is a novel about a remarkable man, a living saint, a life-long celibate and Jesuit priest, who undergoes an experience so harrowing and profound that it makes him question the existence of God. This experience--the first contact between human beings and intelligent extraterrestrial life--begins with a small mistake and ends in a horrible catastrophe.

Mary Doria Russell is one of those. Russell is a paleo-anthropologist who has written scientific articles on subjects ranging from bone biology to cannibalism and has written technical manuals for medical equipment as complex as nuclear magnetic resonance scanners. In 1991, after she figured that "only about 22 anthropologists world-wide read my academic publications and nobody reads computer manuals," she left academia and began writing.

The Kirkus Reviews called The Sparrow "a brilliant first novel about the discovery of extraterrestrial life and the voyage of a party of Jesuit missionaries to Alpha Centauri." This novel is a rare and special blend of intellectualism, spirituality, and really good science fiction. This is an ideal gift for the science fiction fan looking for something deeper than scantily-clad maidens shooting laser guns on desert planets; it's also a great gift for fans of good fiction, period.

Midwest Book Review:
The Sparrow is the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a twenty-first century scientific mission to a newly discovered extraterrestrial culture. Sandoz and his companions are prepared to endure isolation, hardship and death, but nothing can prepare them for the civilization they encounter, or for the tragic misunderstanding that brings the mission to a catastrophic end. Once considered a living saint, Sandoz returns alone to Earth physically and spiritually maimed, the mission's sole survivor, only to be accused of heinous crimes and blamed for the mission's failure. In clean, effortless prose and with captivating flashes of wit, Mary Russell creates memorable characters who navigate the world of exciting ideas and disturbing moral issues without ever losing their humanity or humor. The Sparrow is immediately engaging and very memorable reading!
