ERB, as his fans come to know him, had an incredible literary imagination. And following in the footsteps of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, he wrote his own incredible series of fantastic adventures set in deepest Africa, as well as the worlds of Mars, Venus and beyond.
He's best known as the creator of Tarzan, one of fiction's most enduring heroes, as attested by the numerous movies, and TV series featuring the character. But to science fiction enthusiasts, he's known for creating one of the best space opera epics of all time, the Martian series, along with its strong-armed, eternal hero of John Carter.
A Princess of Mars is ERB's first book, and it's a great place to start. Southern gentleman John Carter is mysteriously transported to the angry red planet upon his "death" where he finds a dying world embroiled in warfare and a mutual distrust of its races. Over the series, Carter fights to keep the planet alive while uniting the factions. If you like A Princess of Mars, you'll soon be hunting down the other tales of this series, such as The Gods of Mars, Warlord of Mars, and possibly the best one of the series The Chessmen of Mars.
If you're a Tarzan fan, you have to start with Tarzan of the Apes and its continuation, The Return of Tarzan.
If you like ERB, you may want to find his lesser-known, but truly entertaining books such as the Venus series featuring Carson Napier and starting with Lost on Venus, and the Pellucidar series beginning with At the Earth's Core. Rarer imaginative works include Beyond the Farthest Star and The Lost Continent.
ERB started out in the pulp magazines, but quickly progressed into the mainstream literary markets. A prolific author, his stories used the pulp formulas, which included strong heroes and heroines, bountiful amounts of action and adventure, and exotic locations. And these qualities is what makes ERB readable today when many of his contemporaries have been forgotten.
Burroughs truly had a fantastic imagination that knew no bounds.
